A marine globe valve is a type of valve commonly used in marine applications for controlling the flow of fluids. It is named after its spherical-shaped body design, which allows for linear flow regulation by raising or lowering a disc or plug inside the valve.

Globe Valves For Flow Control

The working principle of globe valves for flow control is based on the movement of a disc or plug inside a globular-shaped valve body. Here’s a step-by-step explanation of how marine globe valves work for flow control:

  • Flow Control Position: When the globe valve is in the fully open position, the disc or plug is raised, allowing the fluid to flow freely through the valve. The flow path is straight, allowing maximum flow rate.

  • Flow Regulation: To control the flow rate, the operator adjusts the position of the disc or plug by turning the valve stem connected to it. As the stem is turned, the disc or plug moves downward, partially obstructing the flow path. This restricts the flow and reduces the flow rate.

  • Throttling: By further lowering the disc or plug, the flow path becomes increasingly obstructed, resulting in throttling of the fluid flow. Throttling allows for precise adjustment of the flow rate according to the requirements of the system.

  • Flow Shut-Off: When the disc or plug is fully lowered, it comes into contact with the valve seat, completely blocking the flow path and shutting off the flow of fluid. This is the closed position of the globe valve.

  • Sealing: When the disc or plug contacts the valve seat, a tight seal is formed, preventing any leakage of fluid when the valve is in the closed position.

  • Linear Motion: The key characteristic of globe valves is their linear motion. As the valve stem is turned, it raises or lowers the disc or plug in a straight line, allowing for precise control of the flow rate.
