The Working Principle Of Marine Zinc Anode Rod

The zinc anode rod in a water heater works through sacrificial corrosion. Made of a more reactive metal than the water heater’s components, it sacrifices itself to protect them. When submerged in water, the anode rod undergoes intentional corrosion, releasing electrons into the water. This creates an electric current that flows through the conductive path of the water and the metal parts of the heater. By corroding, the zinc anode rod diverts corrosive attacks away from the steel tank and heating elements, preventing their corrosion. Regular inspection and replacement of the anode rod are essential to ensure continued protection.
